Overview
What it does
Slack’s MCP server is hosted by Slack at mcp.slack.com and uses JSON-RPC over Streamable HTTP. It does not support SSE or dynamic client registration. Every MCP client must be backed by a registered Slack app, either published in the Slack Marketplace or internal to your organisation, and workspace admins approve these clients. Users sign in with OAuth and the server acts with a user token. The easiest route is a partner client: Slack lists Claude.ai, Claude Code, Perplexity and Cursor, and Claude Code users can install Slack’s plugin.
Use it when you want an assistant to find past decisions in Slack history, catch up on a thread or post a summary to a channel. Tools cover search across messages, files, users, channels and emoji, reading channels and threads, sending, scheduling and drafting messages, canvases, user profiles, file uploads and Slack lists. Each tool needs specific user token scopes, such as chat:write for sending. Admins can audit MCP activity in the audit logs.

Install
Install Slack MCP server in your app
You need:
- A Slack workspace where an admin has approved the MCP client
- A client backed by a registered Slack app, such as Claude, Claude Code, Cursor or Perplexity; other clients need their own app’s client ID and secret
Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.
claude mcp add --scope local --transport http slack https://mcp.slack.com/mcp
- slack: if the server needs a sign-in, the app will ask (run /mcp in Claude Code).

- slack is a remote server: add it as a custom connector (Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors), with the URL https://mcp.slack.com/mcp.

Want it alongside other servers? Open Slack MCP server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.
Before you install
- The server acts with your user token. With chat:write it can post as you in any conversation you can access.
- Slack advises care when using it alongside other MCP servers, since Slack content can flow into them.
- App IP allowlists apply to MCP requests, and admins can review MCP activity in audit logs.
- A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.
Why it’s listed
