Steps
How to use the claude skills directory
- Search for a task, such as “pdf” or “slides”, or filter by category or source.
- Check the licence and the script count. A skill with scripts can run code on your machine.
- Copy the SKILL.md, or open it in the validator, and read every instruction before you install it.
- In Claude Code, run the plugin commands on the card, or copy the folder into ~/.claude/skills/.
- For claude.ai, zip the folder and upload it under Customize > Skills; for the API, upload it with the Skills API.
Method
How it works
A skill teaches Claude a repeatable task. At the start of a session Claude sees only each skill’s name and description; when your request matches one, it reads the SKILL.md and then any files it points to. That is why the description matters and why a good skill can carry long reference material at no cost until it’s needed. To write your own, use the skill generator.
Where these skills come from
We list skills from three official repositories: anthropics/skills, cloudflare/skills and huggingface/skills. A daily GitHub Actions job reads each one, with no API key, and rebuilds the list. Nothing is curated by popularity or paid placement. Of the 62 skills, 19 from Anthropic have a page with our own write-up; the rest are listed here with their own description.
Licences, checked per skill
The Cloudflare and Hugging Face repositories are Apache 2.0. Anthropic’s has no repository-wide licence: each skill folder carries its own. Most are Apache 2.0, the four document skills (PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel) are proprietary and forbid copying, and doc-coauthoring has no licence file at all, which means all rights are reserved. We republish a SKILL.md only when its licence is a recognised open one, and we serve its licence text next to it. For the 5 others you get our summary and a link to the source. 57 of 62 can be copied.
How to evaluate a skill safely
Anthropic’s advice is to use skills only from sources you trust and to audit every file first, because a skill can direct Claude to run tools or code in ways its description doesn’t mention. In Claude Code a skill’s scripts run with the same access as any program on your computer, including the network. 22 of these 62 skills include files that can run code. Before installing one:
- Read the whole SKILL.md and every file it links to; the validator lists those files.
- Open each script and look for network calls, file access outside the project, or installs.
- Be wary of skills that fetch instructions from URLs: that content can change after you install it.
- Check whether the frontmatter has
allowed-tools, which pre-approves tools while the skill runs. - Install it in one project first rather than in
~/.claude/skills/for everything.
What the checks mean
We run every SKILL.md through the same validator as our SKILL.md validator, twice: once with Claude Code’s rules and once with the stricter rules of claude.ai uploads and the Skills API. 61 of 62 have no errors for Claude Code and 60 have none for claude.ai and the API. A typical portable error is a name containing “claude”, which uploads reject. On this page we leave out the validator’s generic password heuristic, which sample code such as token=hf_token trips; specific key formats are still checked. These are checks of the file, not a review of whether a skill works well.
Installing
Claude Code loads your own skills from two folders, shown below. A plugin can carry skills too, namespaced as /plugin-name:skill-name. Zip the skill folder, then in claude.ai open Customize > Skills, choose + and Create skill, then Upload a skill. Code execution must be turned on. On the API, upload the folder with the Skills API and reference its id alongside the code execution tool; API skills run with no network access and can’t install packages. API skills and claude.ai skills are kept apart. Skills you enable in claude.ai also load in Claude Code when you sign in with the same account (version 2.1.273 or later), but not when it runs on an API key.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are Claude skills?
A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file: a short YAML header with a name and a description, then Markdown instructions, plus any scripts or reference files it needs. Claude sees only the name and description until a request matches, then reads the rest. Skills follow the open Agent Skills format, so they work in Claude Code, claude.ai, the Claude API and other agents that support it.
What is the difference between a Claude skill and an MCP server?
An MCP server gives Claude new tools, such as querying a database or calling an API, through a local or remote server it connects to. A skill gives Claude know-how: instructions, and sometimes scripts, that it reads only when a task needs them. They work together; a skill can explain how to use an MCP server’s tools well. The MCP config generator sets up servers, and the skill generator writes your own skill.
How do I install a skill in Claude Code?
Put the skill’s folder in ~/.claude/skills/ to use it in every project, or in .claude/skills/ inside a repository to share it with your team. The folder name becomes the command, such as /pdf. If the skill’s repository is a plugin marketplace, you can instead run /plugin marketplace add with the repository and then /plugin install, as shown on each card.
Are Claude skills safe to install?
Treat a skill like software you install. Its instructions steer Claude, and its scripts run with your permissions in Claude Code. Anthropic advises using skills only from trusted sources and auditing every file first. Read the SKILL.md, open each script, and look for network calls or file access that don’t match what the skill says it does. Each card here shows how many files can run code.
Why can’t I copy the PDF, Word, PowerPoint and Excel skills?
Anthropic publishes those four under a proprietary licence that forbids copying or redistributing them, so we show our own summary and link to the source instead. You can still use them: they are built into claude.ai and available on the Claude API as pdf, docx, pptx and xlsx, and the official plugin installs them in Claude Code.
Can I use these skills in claude.ai or the API?
Yes, if the skill uses only the portable frontmatter fields; each card shows its result for “claude.ai and API”. For claude.ai, zip the folder and upload it under Customize > Skills, with code execution turned on. Anthropic’s Help Center lists skills on every plan, including Free, though the platform docs still name only Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise for custom skills, so check your own settings. For the API, upload it with the Skills API and use it with the code execution tool. Skills you upload on the API don’t appear in claude.ai, or the other way round. Skills enabled in claude.ai do load in Claude Code (version 2.1.273 or later) when you sign in with the same account, but not when Claude Code uses an API key.
How often is this directory updated?
A scheduled job reads the source repositories every day and rebuilds the list when a skill changes, keeping the last good copy if a source is down. Each card shows the date of the last commit that changed that skill. The licences, install steps and docs behind the page were checked by hand on 2026-10-14.
