Overview
What it does
Asana’s MCP server is hosted by Asana at mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp and gives AI tools access to your Asana work graph over Streamable HTTP with OAuth. Claude and ChatGPT have built-in Asana apps. Coding clients such as Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Codex need you to register an Asana MCP app first and use its client ID and secret, with a redirect URL that matches your client. Asana recommends Claude Code for this, since it supports pre-registered OAuth credentials natively.
Use it when your team plans work in Asana and you want an assistant to list what is due, create tasks from meeting notes or post a project status update. Read tools cover tasks, projects, portfolios, goals, teams and users. Write tools create and update tasks in batches of up to 50, create projects with sections, add comments, post status updates and delete tasks. In Claude and ChatGPT, preview tools show a confirmation screen before anything is created. Each session is tied to one workspace.

Install
Install Asana MCP server in your app
You need:
- An Asana account
- An MCP client with Streamable HTTP and OAuth support
- For coding clients: a registered Asana MCP app with a client ID, client secret and matching redirect URL
Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.
claude mcp add --scope local --transport http asana https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp
- asana: if the server needs a sign-in, the app will ask (run /mcp in Claude Code).
Project root. Commit it to share the servers with your team; each person sets the variables in their own shell.

Want it alongside other servers? Open Asana MCP server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.
Before you install
- MCP apps do not use permission scopes. Authorising a client grants all tools, limited only by what your Asana user can see.
- create_tasks and create_project act without a confirmation step, and delete_task cannot be undone.
- Admins on Enterprise+ and Legacy Enterprise can allow or block each MCP client through app management.
- A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.
