Overview

What it does

Linear runs a hosted MCP server at mcp.linear.app over Streamable HTTP. The interactive setup uses OAuth 2.1 with dynamic client registration, so most clients only need the URL. You can also skip the browser flow and pass a Linear API key or OAuth access token as a bearer token. Clients without remote support can connect through mcp-remote, and an SSE endpoint remains only as a deprecated fallback.

It fits teams that plan work in Linear and want an assistant to turn a planning document into a project with issues and milestones, post standup notes as comments, or summarise what a team finished in a cycle. Linear’s docs include ready-made prompts for these workflows. The default endpoint is read-write. A separate /mcp/readonly endpoint only ever exposes read tools, and requesting just the read OAuth scope also blocks write APIs. Each Linear workspace needs its own authentication session.

Tools

What the assistant can do

  • Find, create and update issues and sub-issues
  • Create and update projects and milestones
  • Comment on issues
  • Summarise issues completed in a team’s cycle
  • Read-only endpoint that exposes read tools only

Install

Install Linear MCP server in your app

You need:

  • A Linear account
  • An MCP client with remote server support, or Node.js to run mcp-remote

Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.

Terminal
claude mcp add --scope local --transport http linear https://mcp.linear.app/mcp
  • linear: sign in when the app asks (run /mcp in Claude Code).

Want it alongside other servers? Open Linear MCP server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.

Before you install

  • The default /mcp endpoint can create and change issues, projects and comments. Use https://mcp.linear.app/mcp/readonly or request only the read OAuth scope for read-only access.
  • If you pass an API key in the Authorization header instead of OAuth, create it with only the Read permission unless the assistant needs to write.
  • A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.

Why it’s listed

Why we list it

The vendor-hosted server for a popular issue tracker, with a dedicated read-only endpoint and simple OAuth setup.
