Overview
What it does
Tavily’s MCP server gives assistants web tools for real-time search, extraction of content from given pages, a map of a site’s structure and a crawler that works through a site systematically, plus a deep research tool. You can connect to Tavily’s remote server with your API key in an Authorization header, sign in with OAuth instead, or run the npm package locally with TAVILY_API_KEY set.
It is built for search inside AI workflows, so results come back ready for a model rather than as a page of links. A DEFAULT_PARAMETERS setting, as a header for the remote server or an environment variable locally, fixes defaults such as result count, search depth or image inclusion for every search. Pick it when you want search plus crawling from one provider. A free Tavily account is enough to get an API key.
Tools
What the assistant can do
- Real-time web search
- Extract content from web pages
- Map the structure of a website
- Crawl a website systematically
- Deep research on a topic (tavily_research)
- Default search parameters for every request
Install
Install Tavily MCP server in your app
You need:
- A Tavily account and API key
- An MCP client that supports remote HTTP servers, or Node.js 20 or newer for the local package
Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.
claude mcp add --scope local --transport http tavily https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/ --header "Authorization: Bearer ${TAVILY_API_KEY}"
- Set TAVILY_API_KEY first, e.g. export TAVILY_API_KEY=… in your shell. The command saves the value, not the variable.
Project root. Commit it to share the servers with your team; each person sets the variables in their own shell.

- tavily is a remote server: add it as a custom connector (Customize → Connectors → + Add → Add custom connector; on Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors), with the URL https://mcp.tavily.com/mcp/.
- tavily: put the key in the connector’s Request headers, never in the URL.
In your project, or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project.

- Devin’s docs confirm ${env:…} references for the legacy Cascade agent; for the default Devin Local agent they only document them in OAuth settings. If a server can’t authenticate, check Devin’s MCP docs.
Want it alongside other servers? Open Tavily MCP Server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.
Before you install
- Queries and crawled URLs go to Tavily’s service and use your account’s credits; it has no local file access.
- The README also shows the key in the URL as ?tavilyApiKey=; prefer the Authorization header or OAuth so the key doesn’t end up in logs.
- Crawled page content can contain prompt-injection text, so review what the assistant does with it.
- A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.
Why it’s listed
Why we list it
