Overview

What it does

DeepWiki MCP is a free remote server from Cognition, the company behind Devin. DeepWiki generates wiki-style documentation for public GitHub repositories, and the server gives assistants access to it. It has three tools: read_wiki_structure lists the documentation topics for a repository, read_wiki_contents returns the documentation itself, and ask_question answers a question about a repository with an AI-generated response grounded in its code.

It is handy when you need to understand an unfamiliar open-source project, find where something is implemented or check how a library works before using it. There is no sign-up and no key. Use the Streamable HTTP endpoint at /mcp; the older /sse endpoint is being deprecated. It covers public repositories only; for private ones the docs point to the separate Devin MCP server, which needs a Devin account.

Tools

What the assistant can do

  • List documentation topics for a public GitHub repository
  • Read the generated documentation for a repository
  • Ask a question about a repository and get a grounded answer

Install

Install DeepWiki MCP server in your app

You need:

  • An MCP client that supports Streamable HTTP

Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.

Terminal
claude mcp add --scope local --transport http deepwiki https://mcp.deepwiki.com/mcp
  • deepwiki: if the server needs a sign-in, the app will ask (run /mcp in Claude Code).

Want it alongside other servers? Open DeepWiki MCP in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.

Before you install

  • Questions and repository names are sent to Cognition’s hosted service.
  • It only reads public repositories and cannot access your code, files or accounts; answers are AI-generated, so check them against the source.
  • A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.

Why it’s listed

Why we list it

A free, key-less way to understand any public GitHub project, run by the company that builds DeepWiki.
