Overview

What it does

The Square MCP Server, currently in beta, connects an assistant to the Square API. Square recommends its remote server at mcp.squareup.com, hosted by Block, where you sign in with your Square account through OAuth and authorise only the scopes you need. The remote server only reaches production data. For testing against a Sandbox, Square documents a local package (npx square-mcp-server start) that takes an ACCESS_TOKEN and SANDBOX=true.

Rather than one tool per endpoint, it uses three tools: discover the methods a service offers, get the parameters a method needs, then make the API request. That gives access to every Square service, from catalogue, customers, orders and payments to inventory, invoices, bookings, gift cards, loyalty, team and terminal. It suits sellers and developers who want natural-language reports or quick admin changes on a Square account. Square keeps an allowlist of approved MCP clients for the remote server.

Tools

What the assistant can do

  • get_service_info: discover the methods a Square service offers
  • get_type_info: get the parameters a method needs
  • make_api_request: call any Square API method
  • Covers catalog, customers, orders, payments, refunds and inventory
  • Covers invoices, subscriptions, bookings, gift cards, loyalty, team and terminal

Install

Install Square MCP server in your app

You need:

  • A Square account
  • An MCP client on Square’s allowlist for the remote server

Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.

Terminal
claude mcp add --scope local --transport http square https://mcp.squareup.com/mcp
  • square: if the server needs a sign-in, the app will ask (run /mcp in Claude Code).

Want it alongside other servers? Open Square MCP Server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.

Before you install

  • The remote server works on production data only and make_api_request can take payments, issue refunds and change orders.
  • Test prompts locally against a Sandbox first; the local server supports DISALLOW_WRITES=true for read-only use.
  • A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.

Why it’s listed

Why we list it

Square’s own server exposes the whole Square API through three tools and a vendor-hosted OAuth endpoint.
