Overview

What it does

The Heroku Platform MCP Server connects an assistant to Heroku through the Heroku CLI. The recommended setup runs heroku mcp:start, which reuses your existing CLI login, so there is no API key to store in a config file. It needs Heroku CLI 10.8.1 or newer. As an alternative you can run the @heroku/mcp-server npm package with a HEROKU_API_KEY environment variable. It works on the Common Runtime, Cedar Private and Shield Spaces, and Fir Private Spaces.

Tools are grouped into application management, process and dyno management, add-ons, maintenance and logs, pipelines, teams and spaces, and PostgreSQL. An agent can deploy a project with app.json, run code on a one-off dyno, scale dynos, turn on maintenance mode, promote a pipeline stage or run SQL and diagnostics on Heroku Postgres. Heroku describes the server as in early development, so tools may change.

Tools

What the assistant can do

  • Application management: list, create, rename, transfer and deploy apps
  • Run commands on a one-off dyno
  • Dynos: list, scale and restart
  • Add-ons: list, inspect and provision
  • Maintenance mode and application logs
  • Pipelines: create, list, inspect and promote
  • Heroku Postgres: run SQL, inspect queries and locks, manage backups and upgrades

Install

Install Heroku Platform MCP server in your app

You need:

  • Heroku CLI 10.8.1 or newer, signed in with heroku login
  • A Heroku account

Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.

Terminal
claude mcp add --scope local heroku -- heroku mcp:start
Native Windows (PowerShell)
claude mcp add --scope local heroku -- heroku mcp:start

Want it alongside other servers? Open Heroku Platform MCP Server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.

Before you install

  • The server acts with your Heroku account and can deploy, scale, transfer apps, kill database processes and run SQL against production Postgres.
  • The README documents no read-only flag, so keep tool-call approval switched on in your client.
  • A local MCP server runs with your user account’s permissions. Install it only from the source linked above. See how to choose a safe server.

Why it’s listed

Why we list it

Heroku’s own server, with a release this month, covering apps, dynos, pipelines and Postgres through the familiar CLI login.
