Overview
What it does
The Firebase MCP Server is part of the Firebase CLI (firebase-tools) and starts with the mcp command. It runs locally over stdio and uses the same credentials as the Firebase CLI on that machine, so you sign in once with firebase login or with the server’s own firebase_login tool. Claude Code users can also install it through the Firebase plugin, and Gemini CLI users through the Firebase extension.
Tools are grouped by product: core project and app management, Authentication, Firestore, Realtime Database, SQL Connect, Cloud Functions logs, Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Remote Config, Storage and App Hosting. It also ships prompts such as firebase:init and firebase:deploy and guide resources for setting up services. The --only flag limits which feature groups load (core tools are always on), and --dir sets the project directory. A few tools call Gemini in Firebase, whose output Firebase says you should check before use.
Tools
What the assistant can do
- Core: create and list projects and apps, get SDK config, init services
- Security rules: get and validate Firestore, Storage and Realtime Database rules
- Firestore and Realtime Database: read, query, write and delete data
- Authentication: look up and update users
- Crashlytics: issues, events, reports and notes
- Cloud Functions logs, App Hosting logs and Remote Config templates
- Cloud Messaging: send push notifications
Install
Install Firebase MCP server in your app
You need:
- Node.js 20 or newer and npm
- A Google account with access to a Firebase project (signed in through the Firebase CLI)
Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.
claude mcp add --scope local firebase -- npx -y firebase-tools@latest mcp
claude mcp add --scope local firebase -- cmd /c npx -y 'firebase-tools@latest' mcp
Project root. Commit it to share the servers with your team; each person sets the variables in their own shell.

- On native Windows (not WSL), the reference servers’ READMEs start npx through `cmd /c`: if a server won’t start, use "command": "cmd" with "args": ["/c", "npx", …].
macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json · Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json (Settings → Developer → Edit Config). Restart Claude after saving.

Want it alongside other servers? Open Firebase MCP Server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.
Before you install
- Tools act with your Firebase CLI credentials and can write or delete Firestore and Realtime Database data, update Auth users and send push messages.
- Use --only (for example --only auth, firestore) to load just the feature groups you need, and --dir to pin the project directory.
- A local MCP server runs with your user account’s permissions. Install it only from the source linked above. See how to choose a safe server.
Why it’s listed
Why we list it
Google’s own server covers the whole Firebase product line and ships with the CLI developers already use.
