Overview
What it does
The AWS Knowledge MCP Server is a fully managed remote server hosted by AWS and generally available. You point your client at knowledge-mcp.global.api.aws and it works straight away: no AWS account, no credentials and no local install, though it is rate limited. Clients that only speak stdio can reach it through the fastmcp proxy, as the README shows.
It indexes the latest AWS documentation, API references, What’s New posts, Getting Started guides, blog posts, architecture references and Well-Architected guidance, plus Amplify, CDK, CloudFormation and Strands Agents SDK docs. It is the general-purpose choice in the awslabs/mcp collection because it applies to every AWS service without granting access to an account. We picked it over the AWS API MCP Server, which the README now marks as superseded by the managed AWS MCP Server (in preview). Use one of those when the assistant must actually run AWS operations.
Tools
What the assistant can do
- search_documentation: search AWS docs, agent skills and Strands Agents SDK docs
- read_documentation: fetch an AWS documentation page as Markdown
- list_regions: list AWS Regions with identifiers and names
- get_regional_availability: check which Regions offer a service, feature, API or CloudFormation resource
- retrieve_skill: load an AWS agent skill with workflows and procedures
Install
Install AWS Knowledge MCP server in your app
You need:
- An MCP client that supports remote (Streamable HTTP) servers, or uv to run the fastmcp proxy
Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.

- aws-knowledge: if the server needs a sign-in, the app will ask (run /mcp in Claude Code).
Project root. Commit it to share the servers with your team; each person sets the variables in their own shell.

Want it alongside other servers? Open AWS Knowledge MCP Server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.
Before you install
- The server is read-only and never touches your AWS account; it only sends your queries to AWS.
- Usage is rate limited and subject to the AWS Site Terms.
- A remote server sees whatever the assistant sends it. Sign in with the narrowest access the service offers. See how to choose a safe server.
Why it’s listed
Why we list it
