Steps
Method
OpenAI documents every API model on its own page, with a model ID, a default snapshot and a list of snapshots. This page lists the text models (chat, reasoning and coding models) with those IDs, and leaves out image, audio, embedding and moderation models.
A model name such as gpt-5.5 points to a default snapshot, here gpt-5.5-2026-04-23. OpenAI describes snapshots as the way to “lock in a specific version of the model so that performance and behavior remain consistent”, so pin the snapshot in production and use the plain name for trying things out. Older families keep several snapshots: gpt-4o lists gpt-4o-2024-11-20, gpt-4o-2024-08-06, gpt-4o-2024-05-13. Several newer models, such as GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 family, list a single snapshot with the same name as the model, so the model ID is also the pinned ID. A few names are aliases by design: chat-latest follows the model used in ChatGPT and is updated regularly, and gpt-5.6 routes to GPT-5.6 Sol.
OpenAI’s own advice is to start with GPT-6 Astra (gpt-6-astra) for complex reasoning and coding, choose GPT-6.1 Sol (gpt-6.1-sol) to balance intelligence and cost, and GPT-6 Luna (gpt-6-luna) for cost-sensitive, high-volume work. It describes chat-latest as not recommended for API use. The Pro models (for example gpt-5.5-pro) use more compute per answer; for deprecated Pro models (gpt-5-pro, o3-pro, o1-pro) OpenAI’s suggested replacement is gpt-5.6-sol with reasoning.mode set to pro.
OpenAI uses “legacy” for models that no longer receive updates and “deprecated” once a shutdown date is set; after that date the model can’t be called. Its minimum notice periods are at least six months for generally available models, at least three months for specialised variants such as chat, Codex and deep research models, and as little as two weeks for preview models, so OpenAI advises against previews for business-critical work. The next big shutdown is on 23 Oct 2026, when gpt-4, gpt-4-turbo, gpt-3.5-turbo, gpt-4.1-nano, o1, o3-mini, o4-mini and the gpt-4o-2024-05-13 snapshot stop working. The table of upcoming shutdowns below is built from the same data as the list.
Search your code and configuration for the old ID, switch to the replacement in a test environment, and compare outputs on real prompts before the date. A replacement is priced differently and may use reasoning tokens, so check the cost with the LLM cost calculator and compare candidates in the model comparison. To see which IDs your key can call, use GET https://api.openai.com/v1/models or paste the key into the API key checker, which makes that request from your browser. No key yet? Examples
A model name such as gpt-5.5 is an alias for its default snapshot. Dated snapshots (gpt-5.5-2026-04-23) lock in one version so behaviour stays the same: pin the snapshot in production. Several newer models list a single snapshot with the same name as the model.

FAQ
OpenAI’s featured models are gpt-6-astra, gpt-6.1-sol, gpt-6-luna: GPT-6 Astra for complex reasoning and coding, GPT-6.1 Sol to balance intelligence and cost, and GPT-6 Luna for high-volume, cost-sensitive work. Many older models, such as the GPT-5.6 and GPT-5.5 families, are still available; the list above shows each with its status.
gpt-5.5 is the model name, which points to a default snapshot. gpt-5.5-2026-04-23 is that snapshot: a fixed version that OpenAI says lets you keep performance and behaviour consistent. Use the dated snapshot in production so your results don’t shift if the name is pointed at a newer snapshot.
OpenAI shuts down gpt-4, gpt-4-turbo and gpt-3.5-turbo (with their snapshots) on 23 Oct 2026. Its recommended replacements are gpt-5.6-sol for GPT-4 and GPT-4 Turbo, and gpt-5.6-terra for GPT-3.5 Turbo. Test the replacement on your own prompts before then.
Yes. gpt-4o points to the gpt-4o-2024-08-06 snapshot, and gpt-4o-2024-11-20 is also available. The oldest snapshot, gpt-4o-2024-05-13, is deprecated and shuts down on 23 October 2026, with gpt-5.6-sol as the recommended replacement.
chat-latest points to the latest Instant model used in ChatGPT, and OpenAI updates the snapshot behind it regularly. That makes it useful for trying ChatGPT’s current behaviour, but OpenAI says it isn’t recommended for API use and suggests GPT-6 Astra for production.
Call GET https://api.openai.com/v1/models with your key. It returns every model available to you with its id, creation time and owner, and the id is the exact string to pass as model. It doesn’t say which IDs are aliases or when they shut down, which is what this page adds.
