Steps
Method
Anthropic publishes one model ID per Claude release on the Claude API, plus a matching ID on each cloud platform that resells Claude. The list above has all of them, taken from Anthropic’s models overview, each model’s own page and the deprecations page.
Since the Claude 4.6 generation, IDs have no date: claude-{name}-{major}-{minor}, such as claude-opus-5-5, with the minor number dropped for major releases (claude-sonnet-5). Anthropic is explicit that these dateless IDs are not moving pointers: each is a pinned snapshot whose weights and configuration never change, and an updated model ships under a new ID. Older models carry a snapshot date, as in claude-haiku-4-5-20251001, and the Claude API also accepts a shorter alias (claude-haiku-4-5) that points to the newest dated snapshot of that version. Anthropic notes that the serving infrastructure around a model can still change, so tiny behaviour differences are possible even on a pinned ID.
Hard-code a pinned ID. For current models that is simply the model ID; for models before 4.6, use the dated ID rather than the alias so an update can’t change your results. If you’re unsure which model to pick, Anthropic suggests starting with Claude Opus 5.5 (claude-opus-5-5) for most workloads, Claude Fable 5.1 for demanding reasoning and long-running agent work, and Claude Haiku 5.5 (claude-haiku-5-5) for high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks.
anthropic.claude-opus-5-5. Older models use InvokeModel with IDs like anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929-v1:0; Claude Opus 4.6 was the last to carry the -v1 suffix. Newer InvokeModel models must be called through a cross-region inference profile: add global., us., eu., jp. or apac. in front, as listed for each model. Sending the bare ID returns an error saying on-demand throughput isn’t supported. Regional endpoints cost 10% more than global.claude-haiku-4-5@20251001. The ID goes in the endpoint URL, which the AnthropicVertex SDK client builds for you.Anthropic’s retirement dates apply to the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS and Foundry. Bedrock and Google Cloud set their own schedules, which is why a model retired on the Claude API can still appear there as deprecated.
Anthropic moves models through four stages: active, legacy (no more updates), deprecated (a retirement date is set) and retired (requests fail). It promises at least 60 days’ notice by email before retiring a publicly released model. Claude Sonnet 4.5, for example, is deprecated and retires on 30 Nov 2026; the recommended replacement is claude-sonnet-5-5. To find old IDs in use, export the Usage page in the Claude Console, which breaks usage down by API key and model. When you switch, re-test your prompts: Claude 4.7 and later models reject a non-default temperature, top_p or top_k with a 400 error. Claude Code users can run /claude-api migrate to swap IDs and parameters across a codebase.
Prices for each model are on its Anthropic pricing page; to see what a switch costs, use the LLM cost calculator. No key yet? Follow how to get a Claude API key, then confirm it works and see the models it can call with the API key checker.
Examples
Every Claude model ID is a pinned snapshot, including the dateless IDs used from the 4.6 generation on (claude-opus-5-5 never changes). Older models also accept a short alias such as claude-haiku-4-5, which points to the newest dated snapshot of that version: pin the dated ID in production.

FAQ
claude-opus-5-5 on the Claude API, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry, and anthropic.claude-opus-5-5 on Amazon Bedrock. It is a pinned ID: Anthropic never changes the model behind it, and newer versions ship under new IDs. Anthropic suggests starting with Claude Opus 5.5 for most workloads.
claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929 is the dated snapshot and never changes. claude-sonnet-4-5 is an alias that points to the newest snapshot of Sonnet 4.5, so it could move. Pin the dated ID. Sonnet 4.5 is deprecated and retires on 30 Nov 2026, so plan a move to claude-sonnet-5-5.
No. From the 4.6 generation on, a dateless ID such as claude-sonnet-4-6 is the canonical ID of one fixed snapshot, not a pointer to the latest model. Anthropic says it never updates the weights or configuration behind an existing ID; a newer Sonnet ships under a new ID, such as claude-sonnet-5-5, which you adopt by changing your code.
Add anthropic. in front of the Claude API ID for current models, for example anthropic.claude-opus-5-5 on Bedrock’s Messages-API endpoint. Older models called through InvokeModel use IDs like anthropic.claude-opus-4-6-v1 and need an inference profile prefix such as global. or us.. Each model above lists its exact Bedrock forms.
You sent a base model ID to InvokeModel for a model that AWS only offers through cross-region inference. Put an inference profile prefix in front of the ID, such as us.anthropic.claude-sonnet-4-5-20250929-v1:0, or pass the full inference profile ARN. The prefixes each model supports are listed above; global routing has no price premium, regional costs 10% more.
Call GET https://api.anthropic.com/v1/models with your key. The response lists every model available to you with its ID, max_input_tokens, max_tokens and a capabilities object, plus a line field (such as opus) for grouping models in a picker. Anthropic recommends reading line rather than parsing it out of the ID.
Requests to it fail. Anthropic emails customers with active usage at least 60 days before a publicly released model retires, and lists the date and a recommended replacement on its deprecations page. Retired models stay in the list above, with their replacement, so you can see what to switch to.
