Overview

What it does

Redis’s MCP server is a Python package that you run with uvx. It connects to a Redis database from a redis:// or rediss:// URL, or from environment variables for host, port, user, password and TLS settings. It also supports Redis Cluster mode and Microsoft Entra ID sign-in for Azure Managed Redis. It talks to MCP clients over stdio only.

Use it when an assistant needs to treat Redis as working storage: caching a value with an expiry, keeping session data in a hash, pushing to a queue, appending to a stream or storing JSON documents. It also manages vector indexes and runs vector search, publishes and reads pub/sub messages, and returns server information. A docs tool searches the Redis documentation. The README suggests a read-only Redis ACL user when the assistant only needs to look.

Tools

What the assistant can do

  • String, hash, list, set and sorted set tools
  • Streams, including consumer groups and acknowledgements
  • JSON document storage and path-based updates
  • Pub/sub publish, subscribe and read
  • Vector index management and vector search
  • Server information and Redis documentation search

Install

Install Redis MCP server in your app

You need:

  • uv (provides uvx)
  • A Redis database you can reach

Run in your project. --scope local keeps the servers private to you in this project; use user for every project.

Terminal
claude mcp add --scope local redis -- uvx --from redis-mcp-server@latest redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0
Native Windows (PowerShell)
claude mcp add --scope local redis -- uvx --from 'redis-mcp-server@latest' redis-mcp-server --url redis://localhost:6379/0

Want it alongside other servers? Open Redis MCP Server in the MCP config generator and add the rest; it writes one file per app. The snippets follow the setup in the server’s README, checked on 2026-10-14.

Before you install

  • The assistant can write and delete keys in the database it connects to; there is no read-only flag in the server itself.
  • For read-only use, connect as a Redis ACL user limited to read commands, as the README shows (+@read -@write).
  • A password in the --url is visible in your client config; the REDIS_PWD environment variable is an alternative.
  • A local MCP server runs with your user account’s permissions. Install it only from the source linked above. See how to choose a safe server.

Why it’s listed

Why we list it

Official Redis server covering the main data types plus vector search, with regular releases.
