Claude Code · Install and setup
Raw mode is not supported on the current process.stdin
Claude Code tried to show an interactive prompt while its input wasn’t a terminal, typically during a piped install.
Message
The exact error
Raw mode is not supported on the current process.stdin, which Ink uses as input stream by default.Meaning
What it means
Claude Code’s interface reads keys directly from the terminal (“raw mode”). When its input is a pipe instead, as with curl … | bash, it can’t. Anthropic documents one common case: versions before 2.1.246 tried to show an organisation’s settings-approval dialog during claude install, which fails when the installer is piped.
Causes
Common causes
- Running the installer from a pipe on a version older than 2.1.246 with server-managed settings that need approval
- Running
claudeinteractively with its input redirected from a file or pipe
Fix
How to fix it
Rerun the installer
The install script runs the latest release’s installer, which no longer shows the dialog there.
macOS / Linux curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bashWindows PowerShell irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iexDon’t pipe into interactive Claude Code
For scripts, use non-interactive mode:
claude -p "your prompt".If your organisation forces a settings refresh at startup
The dialog can still appear during install; run the installer from an interactive terminal instead of a pipe, or ask your admin.
